The “visibility” in GIS environment is frequent and simple method of spatial analysis in various fields (e.g. archaeology, tourism, military survey etc… ). Sometimes it is called viewshed one. The use of this kind of analysis in archaeology is based on assumption of:
- the strategic position of a site for defence purposes (visual monitoring of a certain area; mostly the roads and crossroads?)
- or the site regional significance/social presentation (a site demonstrates itself for a specific area) – not military objects exclusively, consider e.g. religious objects as well (church, cathedral etc…).
- or both

In the photo from the 1950s you can see the overall stratigraphic profile of the famous tell settlement Barca near Košice in the bend of the Myslavka brook. The aim of the photo was to document the overall archaeological situation, and since the research team did not have a scale at hand, the archaeologist Dr. Prošek was placed under the profile.

It is quite common to decomposite the terrain situation into simple entities for better undestanding – a process called an archaeological terrain documentation. However only few people understand this attitude properly in sense of consequent synthesis of documented sources. In the case of later graphics/presentation we could easily speak about reverse modeling. In the following section we would present the abilities of 3D modeling for “bringing the life of ordinary documented stratigraphic features”.
Following pictures represent the source (quite simple) documentation of typical rectangular trench.

Being on Caucasus a year ago I decided to make a collection of historical maps of this region. The first one I found somewhere deep in my NAS is map of the Caucasus from 1800 – 1813.

Looking at an old photograph (1930s) of this gypsy settlement in eastern Slovakia, I wonder what Barca and other prehistoric calves looked like in the Bronze Age of the North Carpathians.
